This astonishing documentary takes a deep dive into the many astonishing mysteries of Stonehenge – attempting to find explanations for questions that have remained unanswered for millennia.
From the legend of Merlin stealing the stones and the religious rituals of modern-day Druids, to the latest cutting-edge scientific research, this multi-faceted film reveals spectacular new finds about the circle’s purpose, the monuments that inspired it, and the techniques used to hoist 20-tons of solid rock up to 7 metres high. We tell the story of how Stonehenge became a centre for the counterculture in the 1960s, the notorious ‘Battle of the Beanfield’ – one of the largest mass arrests in British peacetime history, and the protests that led to legal access to Stonehenge for pagan celebrations once more.
With the help of leading archaeologists, we visit the prehistoric ‘metropolis’ where the builders of Stonehenge lived, investigate a series of enigmatic, recently discovered giant pits that surround it, and reveal evidence of previously overlooked celestial alignments thanks to pioneering new work in skyscape archaeology. Mysteries of Stonehenge concludes with a startlingly new discovery about the distant origins of one of the circle’s most mysterious additions – the ancient altar stone, only announced to the world in the scientific journal Nature in August 2024. This is the first time the team have talked about this in a documentary.
