This documentary dives into a terrifying phenomenon that has plagued humanity for thousands of years: sinkholes. Forming suddenly and without warning, from high up in the mountains of Southwest China, to hundreds of metres underwater in the Gulf of Mexico.

We meet sinkhole survivors like Laura Gerber, who nearly drowned in a water-logged sinkhole at the age of 23 and Matt Pritchard, who was forced to watch a chasm slowly tear his home apart. To unravel the mysteries of sinkhole formation - both natural and human-induced - we travel to Florida’s infamous ‘Sinkhole Alley’, where over 20,000 recorded incidents have horrified locals and to Guatemala City, where an epic 20 metre wide sinkhole swallowed up a three storey factory.

But sinkholes don’t just bring death and destruction, cutting-edge technology is revealing never before seen living environments deep within these chasms. With cavers and divers pursuing exhilarating archaeological expeditions 80 metres below ground. Hidden worlds from ancient civilisations (Ancient Rome and the Maya) are being revealed to us for the very first time by new sinkholes opening up beneath our feet.
