ScreenMDM: Road to London: BossaNova’s Paul Heaney
History, mystery, access, and talent anchor BossaNova Media’s London TV Screenings lineup, CEO and founder Paul Heaney says in this Road to London episode of ScreenMDM Talks, which explores how the well-regarded U.K.-based distributor is using data from its popular Development Days and its network of relationships to meet the needs of buyers and deliver returns to producers.
“Buyers aren’t looking to hoover up as much as possible, certainly in major markets,” Heaney says on the approach to crafting its seven-title slate for its LTVS event on Wednesday. “For us, it’s as much about launching new brands as it is about keeping existing ones returning.”
Key highlights include two series with Alice Roberts—Secret of the Lost Grail and Roman Empire by Train—Hunting Outback Gold, Nevada Wild, and Steam Train Diaries, plus more Airport Security: USA and Guy Martin: Proper Jobs.
“Returnable, repeatable, scalable, sustainable,” Heaney says on the company’s approach to building a slate that buyers will want to engage with.
BossaNova’s Development Days, which convene producers and buyers from around the world to assess projects, have been paramount in helping the company to intelligently build its lineup, ensuring it is informed by clients’ needs. “We now see it as front and center of how content is put together, and buyers see it as well.”
Heaney also weighed in on AI, true crime trends, restructuring to prepare the company for the road ahead, evolving opportunities for brand involvement, and the importance of taking calculated risks today.
“Never ever stray to the vanilla. Take some risks. We’ve always taken risks. If you go down the vanilla route of just playing it safe and sticking to your lane, you’re just going to start cannibalizing your own content and implode. The adage last year was to diversify channel, relationship, platform, and territory. It’s all of those now, plus it’s also genre, plus it’s also the means of production and the method of production.”
