Broadcast: Britespark constructs Channel 4 penis doc

The Man With A Penis On His Arm will explore phalloplasty procedure as part of a debate about identity

A man who has had a surgically constructed penis on his forearm for six years is the subject of a BriteSpark Films doc for Channel 4.

The one-hour documentary, The Man With A Penis On His Arm, will explore the relationship between the possession of a penis and what it is to be a man.

After losing his penis 12 years ago due to a perineum infection, the film centres on Malcolm MacDonald, who had a new penis constructed onto his forearm by surgeons, through a process called phalloplasty. The construction never reached its final destination however, leaving MacDonald with a penis on his arm for the past six years.

It will also examine the stories of Anick Soni, who was born intersex with a micropenis, and Lee Carter, who has undergone phalloplasty to change gender.

The three men’s stories explore the process of phalloplasty, the psychological effects of being without a penis and how it relates to the men’s feelings about gender.

Tom Porter, who will exec produce alongside Nick Godwin, said that the film “gives the viewer a completely unique angle from which to explore masculinity and the male psyche.”

The documentary will be directed by Tom Green, who has previously helmed C4’s sex doc Swingers.

The commission follows C4 chief creative officer Ian Katz’s commitment to ordering the “wildest, boldest and most outlandish” ideas, to reflect its radical origins ahead of its 40th birthday in November.

It follows C4 taboo docs including Boobs, 100 Vaginas, Me and My Penis and Bring Back the Bush.

The Man With A Penis On His Arm was ordered by recently promoted head of specialist factual Shaminder Nahal, who added that she is grateful to the participants for sharing their stories and “opening up a debate about identity and the nature of masculinity in a uniquely compelling and sensitive way”.

BriteSpark is also prepping a two-part documentary on the porn star Ron Jeremy (w/t) for C4.

The Argonon-owned indie has grown its slate with over 50 hours of new commissions won from UK and US broadcasters in recent months.

The Man With A Penis On His Arm will be distributed by Bossa Nova.
